To the great chain of life that precedes us and of which we are part; to each being that has contributed with its movement to the evolutionary dance we witness today.
To the community of TRE practitioners around the world, who day by day rediscover the inherent wisdom of the body.
Body Memory: A Phylogenetic Journey
There exists within our body a silent wisdom that transcends our individual existence. A somatic memory that connects with the entirety of the evolutionary tree, with every living being that has existed before us. This memory normally remains inaccessible, hidden beneath layers of rationality and everyday life. However, there are extraordinary moments when it reveals itself, reminding us of our belonging to something far vaster than our personal identity.
The Body Remembers What the Mind Forgets
Some time ago, during a TRE session (Tension & Trauma Releasing Exercises), I experienced a very significant transpersonal connection. What began as a regular practice of tension release—those neurogenic tremors that the body naturally produces to restore its balance—transformed into a portal to the evolutionary memory of vertebrates on this planet Earth.
As my body trembled and moved autonomously, something extraordinary began to happen. Each movement of my spine seemed to recapitulate movement patterns of other life forms. It wasn’t me who was moving; it was phylogenetic memory expressing itself through my somatic structure.
First came the gentle undulations, similar to those of fish in primordial water. My spine became living testimony to those first vertebrates that swam in ancient oceans. Then, the movements transformed into the rhythmic patterns of reptiles sliding across the land. Shortly after, my limbs replicated the jumps of a rabbit, connecting with mammals that learned to move with agility on the ground.
In a surprising moment, I felt my chest expand as if wanting to take flight, reproducing the respiratory patterns of birds. It was as if my body was reading a book of evolutionary history written in the language of movement, a text inscribed in our cells since the beginning of time.
Somatic Consciousness: Bridge Between the Personal and Transpersonal
This experience reminded me that the body is not simply a vehicle for individual consciousness, but a repository of collective wisdom. Through somatic awareness, we access dimensions of experience that transcend the boundaries of our personal identity.
TRE, a technique created by Dr. David Berceli, was initially developed as a tool to release stress and trauma. However, like many deep somatic practices, it can become a bridge to transpersonal experiences when cultivated with proper attention. By allowing the body to express itself autonomously, without the constant interference of the analytical mind, channels of perception that usually remain closed begin to open.
The fascinating thing is that this bodily wisdom doesn’t require academic studies on evolution or comparative biology. It’s there, encoded in our cells, waiting to be rediscovered through direct experience.
Universal Human Right
It’s important to note that TRE, as a self-regulation tool, is a right of humanity. It’s not the exclusive property of any institution or individual. I’ve had the honor of sharing these techniques in both public and private spaces, observing how people from diverse backgrounds reconnect with their essential nature.
Although not everyone who practices TRE will experience this type of ancestral connection, the mere possibility of reconnecting with our most basic and self-regulating nature is already an invaluable gift. The simple act of allowing the body to release accumulated tensions returns us to a state of greater presence and vitality.
Ancestral Memory as Guide
What I experienced during that session wasn’t simply an interesting psychological phenomenon, but a deeply healing experience. Upon reconnecting with these ancestral movement patterns, something in my nervous system seemed to reorganize itself, as if remembering a primordial order that had been temporarily forgotten.
These types of transpersonal experiences remind us that we are more than our personal history. We are part of an evolutionary narrative that extends for millions of years, and our bodies carry the memory of that incredible journey.
The Wisdom That Awaits Us
My wish is that each of us can, in our own way, access this wisdom that transcends our individuality. That we remember our bodies are not mere biological machines, but temples of an evolutionary memory that connects with the totality of life on Earth. In each movement, in each breath, pulses millions of years of evolution, waiting to be recognized, honored, and expressed.
Perhaps it is in these moments of transpersonal connection when we most fully realize our nature: not as separate beings, but as individual expressions of a broader consciousness that manifests through countless forms, all connected in the great dance of life.
